Sodium bicarbonate or sodium hydrogen carbonate (NaHCO3) is a compound found in mineral deposits around the world. Although very popular and useful, it was not put into use until the mid 1800’s.
Properties of Sodium Bicarbonate

Uses of Sodium Bicarbonate
Sodium bicarbonate is one of the most versatile ingredients in the kitchen. It is used to make bread and pastries, remove odors, make beauty formulas; in cleaning and medicinal applications; and more.

- Beauty and bath products
- Bath salts and bombs: bicarbonate creates little bubbles that help relax muscles and neutralizes acids in the skin removing the smell of sweat
- Teeth cleaning: Some toothpastes contain bicarbonate. It can be used with regular toothpaste to whiten teeth because of its abrasive action.
- Antacid that neutralizes stomach acid and is used in drug development.
- In laboratories, as a regulator of pH
- In the production of salt, fizzy drinks, mineral water and cooking powder
- Electrolytic plating for gold and platinum
- In the tanning industry
