The Operation of a Filter Press

A filter press separates liquids and solids through filtration by pressure. It consists of a series of steel racks that hold sheets or mesh. These removable filter sheets are made of polypropylene and the mesh can be either sealed, unsealed or high resistance membranes.

 

Filter presses are a simple and reliable method for high compaction. The solids are pumped between each pair of racks and once full, a piston presses the racks against each, pushing the water through the fabric. The filter press can compress and dehydrate solids until 25% to 60% of the weight of the sludge pumped into it is compacted.

The filter press has a simple operation:

 

First, the liquid sludge is pumped into the chambers which are surrounded by filter canvas. By pumping, the pressure increases and the sludge is forced through the canvas, causing the solids to accumulate and form a dry paste. Subsequently, the hydraulic piston pushes against the steel frames of polyethylene plates in the press. The head and the support terminal rails are held in place by support bars. The filtrate passes through the canvas and is directed through the channels of the plates and head drain ports for discharge.

 

To remove the paste packed in the filter, the pneumatic piston is released, decreasing the pressure and separating each of the plates to allow the paste to slide from the chamber.

Filter presses are widely used in solid-liquid separation. Applications include filtration and clarification of many liquids, including beer and wine, and in the chemical, artificial textile, sugar, petroleum, ceramic, and certain extractive industries.
