Container: any receptacle or holder that contains or stores a product, protects goods, is easy to transport, helps distinguish it from other items and presents the product for sale. A container is any can, box, container, or self-contained wrapper that holds any material or item.

One of the main functions of a container is to preserve the product. In this sense, the characteristics of a good container are:

  • Ability to contain the product
  • Enable identification
  • Capacity to protect the product
  • Fit with consumer needs in terms of size, ergonomics, quality, etc.
  • Adjustable for units of shipping and product distribution
  • Easily adapted to production lines and product packaging, and in particular to automatic packaging production lines
  • Compliant with existing laws
  • Price range appropriate to the product’s commercial offering
  • Resistant to tampering, can be transported and distributed commercially

Packaging is the process by which a commodity is put into containers or packaged for transport and sale. This term includes both the production of container as putting the product into it.

Packing includes the activities of designing and producing the container or wrapper for a product. Its primary objective is to protect the product, packaging, or both, and be a promoter of the item within the distribution channel.

Packaging is also the word used for all materials, procedures and methods used to prepare, display, handle, store, preserve and transport merchandise. The packaging must meet three requirements: be strong, protect and preserve the product (water resistant, hygienic, sealed, etc.), and promote sales. Packaging should also display information about conditions for handling, legal requirements, composition, ingredients, etc.
