Today, logistics is an important issue for companies that are in constant struggle to be part of the first world. But what are logistics?

Logistics is defined as the body of knowledge, actions and means to predict and provide the resources necessary to perform a core activity in a certain time and manner, at less cost in terms of productivity and quality. That is, the logistics are responsible for the efficient distribution of products within a certain company at a lower cost while providing excellent customer service.

Furthermore, in business terms, logistics is defined as the process of strategically managing the movement and storage of raw materials, parts and finished goods from suppliers through the company until the end user, because the theory is that the product acquires its value when the customer receives it in time, adequately and cheaply as possible.

Logistics is as old as business itself, and could said to be what was formerly known as distribution. It has its origins in military activity, which developed this tool to supply troops with the resources and supplies (i.e., ammunition, weapons, etc.) necessary to address the long days and distant camps in war. The concept was adopted in business environments four decades ago, where it has been found to be the most developing field.

Logistics determine and coordinate in optimal form the correct product, the correct client, the correct place and the correct time. Assuming that the role of marketing is to stimulate demand, the role of logistics is to precisely satisfy that demand.

For some time now, business logistics functions have increased in importance because markets have become more demanding. Firms have to compete with companies around the world and must respond in the best way to every one of their customers. Further, the emergence of new information technologies has resulted in lower transaction costs and times, which has forced companies to take logistics management more seriously if they want to remain competitive.

Previously, logistics meant only having the right product at the right place at the right time at the lowest possible cost. Now, however, apparently simple activities have been redefined and are now considered a process.

There are two basic forms of logistics:

- Optimizing a constant flow of material through a network of transport links and storage facilities.
- Coordinating a resource stream for a given project.

The key activities for good logistics management are:

- Customer service
- Inventories
- Supplies
- Transportation and distribution
- Storage

Together, these activities will achieve customer satisfaction and reduced business costs in addition to providing strong competitiveness in regards to other companies.
