Because it is difficult to determine or control the direction that small pieces of metal fly from material being machined, all machine operators must use some kind of eye protection.
Contact lenses are not considered substitutes for the protection of the eyes. Some workers have suffered permanent sight disabilities and blindness from the presence of harsh chemicals or small particles between a contact lens and the eye.
On the other hand, if you need to wear eyeglasses, it is preferable to use prescription goggles. Safety goggles can be used to cover eyeglasses, although they will be cup-shaped and need to be wide enough to completely fit over the glasses.
Plastic vs. Glass Eyewear
When deciding between plastic and glass eyewear, there are a number of factors to consider:
- Both can pass the tests of impact when they meet established formulations and thicknesses.
- Glass offers less resistance to cracking than plastic in the case of sharp objects
- Evidence shows that the plastic lenses have a more favorable resistance to small objects moving at high speeds
- Although neither is completely resistant to abrasion, resistance is improved by plastics.
- Plastics are resistant to hot materials. The hot metal will invariably break glass but not plastic. Hot metals also tend to adhere to glass.
- Plastics generally react to certain chemicals, although they are effective to stop spills and protect the eyes.
- Although the fogging occurs with glass as well, plastic takes longer to fog up.
- Plastic lenses offer greater comfort and the ability to be properly adjusted to each user.
