Brazilian petrochemical firm Braskem has teamed up with Amyris and Michelin alliance to develop a new process for the production of renewable isoprene.
Braskem will join the Michelin and Amyris collaboration to develop and commercialise renewable isoprene, which was formed in 2011.
The new technology will use plant sugars commonly found in sugarcane or cellulosic feedstocks, to produce renewable isoprene, which will be used in various applications, including adhesives, coatings and sealants.
Under the partnership, Amyris will have rights to commercialise the renewable isoprene technology, while Michelin will maintain certain preferential access to the renewable isoprene to be produced by this technology.
Michelin will gain access to a sustainable sourcing platform for poly-isoprene, which is used in the production of tyres.
Braskem polyolefins and renewables vice president Luciano Guidolin said: "With this new partnership, we join forces with Amyris and Michelin in the development of an innovative technology that strengthens our commitment to improve people's lives, creating solutions through sustainable chemistry."
Michelin Materials Division head Jean-Christophe Guerin said: "Braskem's chemical industry experience, coupled with Amyris' biotechnology expertise, will support Michelin's goal of addressing the long-term needs of the tyre industry for sustainable sourcing with renewable chemicals."
