LANXESS Distribution GmbH is now marketing the feed additive butylhydroxytoluene (BHT) under the new brand name Rovelox. The antioxidant modeled on Vitamin E previously was sold under the name BHT Feed Grade. “With the new name Rovelox, we want to achieve a clearer association worldwide with the feed additives market segment, because we already are well established in the feed industry with our preservative Rovelan,” explains Arno Kinnen, Head of Specialty Products at LANXESS Distribution GmbH.

Rovelox antioxidant is added to feed for livestock to prevent fatty ingredients from becoming rancid. The unsaturated fatty acids contained in feed can easily be degraded by the harmful effects of oxidation. They become rancid and lose their nutritional value. Essential fat-soluble vitamins likewise can be destroyed by oxidation. Rancid fats not only have a bad odor and taste, which alone lessen feed acceptance, they are also toxic and potentially carcinogenic.

To keep animals healthy and productive, particularly farm livestock, they are given nutritious feed adapted to their specific requirements. Suitable additives are incorporated in feed, such as vitamins, amino acids, enzymes, probiotics and trace elements. Antioxidants like Rovelox and preservatives like Rovelan protect feed from spoiling. For the purposes of quality assurance, the EU Association of Specialty Feed Ingredients and their Mixtures (FEFANA) has established the internationally standardized Feed Additives and Premixtures Quality System (FAMI-QS) for producers and distributors. “Rovelox has earned FAMI-QS certification and further fulfills all the specific quality requirements of the feed industry,” Kinnen says.

Antioxidants are also important as additives in foodstuffs, drugs and cosmetics to prevent the oxidative degradation of sensitive molecules. The oxidation of certain ingredients or constituents can adversely affect taste or odor, weaken effect or even lead to the generation of harmful products of decomposition. Purolan BHT is an antioxidant for cosmetic products that effectively stabilizes oils and fats.
