Momentive Specialty Chemicals has unveiled plans to build a forest products manufacturing facility in the city of Curitiba in Parana, Brazil.

The project will include the construction of an administrative headquarters building and associated infrastructure improvements for a formaldehyde production plant with an annual capacity of 150,000t.

The facility will also include base resin manufacturing for wood adhesives.

Work on the project will take approximately 18 months, the company has said.

Momentive Specialty Chemicals forest products division executive vice president and president Dale Plante said: "We remain committed to the continued growth of our leading Latin American forest products resins business.

"Today, we operate five sites in the region and greatly appreciated working with the state government and economic development officials in Parana during the site selection process."

Forest products resins are used as key adhesive and binding ingredients in various engineered lumber products, including medium-density fibreboard, particleboard, oriented strand board and other types of plywood and laminated veneer lumber.

The lumber products are used in the construction, remodelling and furniture industries.

Formaldehyde is a key raw material in the manufacture of other chemicals and products, including methylene diphenyl diisocyanate and butanediol.

Ohio-headquartered Momentive Specialty Chemicals is an indirect wholly-owned subsidiary of Momentive Performance Materials, which caters to wood and industrial markets through a range of thermoset technologies and speciality products.
